History of Bankside
The name Bankside is derived from the Old English name Banke Syde, which means "street along the bank of the Thames". Initially, Bankside sat out of the City of London's authority and became occupied by bear-baiting pits and playhouses like the Globe.
In the early 20th century, the area lost much of its intrigue and was mostly used as a dock. That was until later in the 20th century when Bankside transformed into a popular tourist hub and sought-after neighbourhood.
