Ten of the best ideas for Valentine's Day

Calling all you lovebirds – the day to declare to the world that your schnookums/ pookiepie/ snufflewuff/ cuddlebun is the pearl in your oyster and the spring in your step is almost here. Whether you think it's purely a Hallmark marketing scam or you’re currently making a heart-shaped photo frame out of macaroni and PVA glue for your beloved, spending Valentine’s Day in London is the ultimate romantic dream. You won’t be able to settle for a nice box of chocolates this year – London is offering up a plethora of lovetastic events and activities for all you happy couples.

Single and proudly declaring that you don’t care about Valentine’s Day yet secretly crying on the inside (just a little bit?). Don’t worry – there are some great events happening for the singletons seeking that special someone, too. Who knows, maybe Cupid will shoot you with his arrow and you’ll be the one saying ‘Yes!’ at the top of the Eiffel Tower next year.

The Institute of Sexology Exhibition at the Wellcome Collection

Stimulate your brain as well as your… well… you know, this Valentine’s Day with an intriguing look into the changing social attitudes and understandings about sex. Focusing on studies that have been undertaken since the 19th century by scientists and thinkers such as Kinsey and Freud, this exhibition investigates how our improved understanding of sex, desire and fantasy has helped shape and lift taboos.

The exhibition topic is proving quite popular so, while the exhibition is free, it's recommended that you book tickets in advance.

You can also cuddle up in the 100-seater theatre to watch Quentin Taratino’s classic, True Romance.

For the Single Folk

Where is the Nomad Pop-Up Cinema

This is one for the single ladies. Relish the fact that you’re not attached and therefore if Ryan Gosling were to walk down the street, fall instantly in love with you and ask for your hand in marriage, you could say yes. Until that happens, you can stare at him on a big screen at the Where is the Nomad pop-up cinema at Hyde Park. This roaming cinema will be at Hyde Park on both 13th and 14th of February and is the perfect way to escape reality.

Buy tickets online at the Where is the Nomad website.

Address: The Royal Parks Foundation, Hyde Park, London, W2 2UH

‘Regrets’ Alternative Valentine’s with Robin Lee

You won’t find any schmaltzy romance here – artist Robin Lee has put together a very different version of all things ‘hearts’ with a graphic and rather confronting exhibition focusing on what you might change or rectify before it’s too late. While the opening night isn’t happening until 18 February, we still think this is worth being put on the Valentine’s calendar. The opening night will include canapés and drinks themed to suit the exhibition. Think marinated ox hearts and Bloody Marys served in syringes.

Buy your tickets to the opening night via EventBrite.

Address: Barts Pathology Museum, St Bartholomew's Hospital, West Smithfield, EC1A 7BE

Phone: 020 7882 5555
